If ever a wine producing country faced adversity it was Australia, first attempts at cultivating grape vines began in the late 1700’s when Australia was still a penal colony, decades later wine was produced, but not without difficulty, the Australian climate was unfamiliar, at times harsh. Perseverance won though, and by 1873 Australian wine had been entered into the Vienna Exhibition, during a blind tasting the French judges gave praise to a wine produced in Victoria, when it was revealed that the wine was Australian the French were outraged and withdrew stating a wine so good could only come from France!
Australia continues to produce outstanding quality wines and is now becoming a benchmark others compare to.
