Brandy classed as Armagnac is produced in the Gascony region in the South West of France. Armagnac brandy is typically more fruitful and fuller flavoured than other brandy. Armagnac is covered by France’s AOC status.
Armagnac is produced from grapes and distilled in column stills. It is traditionally produced in one distillation which produces a lower ABV product than Cognac which is twice distilled. Once distilled the clear spirit is transferred to Oak cask for ageing. Because Armagnac starts off as a lower ABV and when you take into account the ‘angels share’ the resulting product doesn’t usually require cutting with water to reduce the ABV to bottling strength, which in part creates the fuller flavour.
As with other Brandy regions there is different classification of Armagnac dependent on the minimum age of the brandy. VS Armagnac must be aged for a minimum of 2 years, VSOP must be aged 5 years and XO a minimum of 6 years. Unlike Cognac a lot of older aged Armagnac is classed as vintages of certain years, these vintages makes fantastic presents if you can source a bottle distilled from the year of their birth.
Armagnac produces much smaller quantities and is lesser known than France’s other region of Cognac. Armagnac is not dominated by International brands but is instead still produced and marketed by local companies. This makes it really interesting trialling the numerous products and expressions available. Our range consists of great products from Baron de Sigognac, Janneau, Clos Martin, and Chateau de Laubade.
