Genever or Jenever is the traditional distilled drink of the Netherlands and Belgium, it is what went on to become Gin, like London gin there are strict regulations around the way it is made. Hugely popular in the Netherlands, Belgium and the nearby French and German regions Genever is made only in these locations and is protected in the same way Champagne is. The two types of Genever are “old” and “young” which is not related to the age of the spirit, it is actually about the techniques used to make it. Young or Jonge Genever is more neutral in flavour and in many ways is similar to Vodka, Old or Oude Genever is woody in flavour due to oak ageing, it tends to be smoother and more aromatic with malty flavours.
