Georgia is one of the oldest wine producing regions in the world, wine has been produced here for over 8000 years. Originally grape juice was buried in clay pots through the winter to keep for the spring, on opening it was discovered that the grape juice was now fermented and the experience was far more pleasant. So important was this discovery that by 4000 BC Georgians were cultivating grape vines and producing wine that in some cases was fermented for as much as fifty years.
Today Georgia produces fantastic wines due to the temperate and consistent climate, production is estimated to be in excess of 15 million bottles per year.
